Spark Spotlight: Saedah (LADYSAE)

By , SparkPeople Blogger
At SparkPeople, we love helping people accomplish big goals—but we believe it's equally important to celebrate the small successes along the way. Each week in the Spark Spotlight, we'll check in with a featured member about his or her proudest moments, biggest challenges and advice for others on living, thinking and feeling healthier. We hope these quick snapshots will help motivate you to keep moving steadily toward your own goals, week by week.

Saedah's Small Success of the Week

What's your overall goal?

My overall goal is to lose 48 kilos (105 pounds) and reach my goal weight of 52 kilos (114 pounds). Someday, I also want to transition from walking to running.

How is SparkPeople helping you?

I take part in Spark Challenges and and use the tips and advice there. It has helped me a lot. I also read the Community Feed for encouragement. There are many people from all walks of life striving to get healthy, and that reminds me that I am not alone with my struggles--and that I, too, can do this.

What's your biggest challenge right now?

My biggest challenge is not eating the junk food served at my mum's place whenever I visit her. My mum's cooking is very unhealthy, with lots of fast and easy cooking (think fried). She also serves up lots of sweet dishes. She lives five minutes away from me and that means I see her at least three or four times a week. I plan early and eat before I visit her so I am not caught hungry at her house. I also take some food with me, so if I get hungry, I don't have to turn to her high-calorie options.

What advice do you have for someone who just joined SparkPeople today?

Just start with whatever you can do, even if it's something very small (like walking for 10 minutes and eating a piece of fruit every day). Keep adding to it and making changes as you go along. When I started walking at first, all I could do was 2,500 steps. Now, I'm walking anywhere from 10,000 to 16,000 steps. I enjoy it more now and make sure I take my rest days to let my body recover.
