10 Healthy Home Remedies

Treating minor health problems doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, you may already own some of the miracle-workers in this slide show. Click through to find out which foods, drinks and craft supplies (yes, craft supplies) can make you feel better fast.

1. Soothe a Sunburn with Vinegar

Plain white vinegar helps ease the pain and itch of a recent burn, and may also prevent blisters from forming. If the burn is on your face, soak a cotton ball in vinegar and dab onto affected areas. If it's on a larger part of your body, use a washcloth or paper towel and cover your skin for 15 minutes.

2. Fade Sun or Age Spots with Lemon Juice

The citric acid in a lemon helps dissolve dead skin cells, exposing fresh skin underneath. Lemons also contain vitamin C, an antioxidant that protects the skin from future damage. Cut the fruit in half and squeeze out the juice. Dab on skin with a cotton swab and leave on for 1 to 2 minutes before rinsing. Use this remedy before bed, but not in the morning (citrus contains a compound that can cause darkening when exposed to sunlight).

3. Relieve an Itchy Bug Bite with Bananas

The inside white part of a banana peel helps moisturize and calm irritation. Apply the inside of the peel directly to the bite for 2 to 3 minutes.

4. Calm Swollen Skin with Green Tea Bags

The tannins and caffeine in tea bags help reduce swelling. Green tea works best because it also contains EGCG, an anti-inflammatory compound. Put used tea bags in the fridge for 30 minutes, then place on swelling.
Bonus benefit: Have a small paper cut or scrape? Clean it thoroughly, then put a tea bag directly on the cut, pressing gently for 5 minutes. The tannins in tea help clot the blood.
